Meet our Contact Centre graduate: Christina
Customer Service Representative (CSR), Auckland Council
Contact Centre Training, Contact Centre Operations – Level 3 - Solomon Group
Being made redundant from a job she loved was a huge blow for Christina. But now, thanks to Solomon Group, she’s back on track, with an awesome new job and newfound confidence.
What impact did redundancy have on you? I was made redundant from my admin job in 2017 and it really knocked my confidence. I’ve been working ever since I was 16, and I’m 30 now. Being unemployed is not my thing. Staying at home made me feel useless and worthless. One day when I was online, a Solomon Group ad popped up calling for contact centre superstars. I thought ‘why not try it’?
How did the course help you get back on track? This particular course was the perfect stepping stone. It’s run in collaboration with Auckland Council and if you put in the work, have good attendance and pass all your assessments, you’ll get a job. The way I see it, that’s a no-brainer. If I hadn’t taken this leap I’d probably still be at home applying for jobs right now.
Solomon Group gave me a purpose and recharged my batteries. They gave me a fresh chance and kicked me back into gear and I am so grateful, because now I’ve got a fantastic job with Auckland Council. I’m so happy to get off the benefit and back into work mode. Being on the benefit you don’t really get to live life – now that I’m working I can start living again.
What were the course highlights? Just coming to class every day was a highlight. I loved the campus, the tutors always made time for the students, and everyone helped each other. All my classmates were understanding, supportive and caring. No one was higher or lower than anyone else, and we developed such a lovely bond that I know we will all stay in touch. My tutor taught me so much. She has got such great experience and she really opened my eyes to the contact centre industry.
What does it take to be a good CSR? You need to be resilient, open-minded and focussed, with good customer service skills. You also need to have fun – if you don’t like your job, it’s obviously not for you.
Tell us about your job. I am now a CSR for the Auckland Council. It’s so good to go back to work, and I love the fact that I am working with many of the friends I studied at Solomon Group with. It makes starting a new job a lot less nerve-wracking when you are all in it together.
What are your goals for the future? I think the contact centre is the best place to learn about Auckland Council so it’s the perfect place for me to start. I’d love to be working in this call centre for the next two or three years just gaining experience, and then hopefully I can become a team leader.
