Recently we had the privilege of attending the Pō Fiefia celebration held by the Ministry of Pacific Peoples. This event was a special celebration of successful Pacific people who received the New Year and Queen’s Birthday honours over the past three years.
Among those being celebrated were Dame Valerie Adams, honoured as the youngest New Zealander and first Pacific person to be appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit at last year’s New Year's Honours, and La’auli Sir Michael Jones being awarded the Queen’s Birthday Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit at this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. These two attended as guests of honour, as well as the Minister for Pacific Peoples and Hon Alfred Ngaro.
The New Zealand Governor General Her Excellency The Rt. Hone Dame Patsy Reddy addressed the attending guests, congratulating the Pacific Island Honours Recipients by saying “You have earned the respect of your communities and are an inspiration and a source of great pride to all New Zealanders”.
